Andrew Smith Wilson - Chemist
Description
Andrew Smith Wilson established a chemist's business in Dunedin under the name 'Medical Hall' in 1852. He had recently arrived from Scotland, where he had completed his training for his profession. He is thought to have been 26 years old.
Wilson issued tokens in 1857. They were struck for him by W. J. Taylor of London. In 1863 he sold his business to Messrs. Wilkinson and Dixon.
He is also said to have been one of the first photographers in Dunedin and is credited with having taken the first photograph of the town.
In 1863 Wilson lived in Moray Place, Dunedin, and worked for Reynolds & Co., Aerated water manufacturers. That business closed in 1867. Wilson died on 4 January, 1883 at the age of 57.
