Threepence - 1953 to 1964 - Price Guide
Queen Elizabeth II first appeared in 1953 on our coinage following the death of her father in 1952. The rather engaging portrait of the young queen was designed by English sculptress, Mrs Mary Gillick, an ageing widow whose design was accepted as she celebrated her seventy-first birthday. The legend was also revised.
Collectors often face confusion when a seemingly 'worn' coin is graded as uncirculated. An unusually high proportion of weak strikes are found on the obverse of George V threepences. The detail on the reverse of threepences struck between 1938 to 1964 is often found similarly affected.
For the years 1953 and 1954, the obverse legend was: ELIZABETH . II. DEI. GRATIA. REGINA + This was changed to: ELIZABETH . II. DEI. GRATIA. REGINA. F: D: + from 1955 to 1964.
