Sixpence - 1938 to 1952 - Price Guide
The design was to change on each of the coins in 1938 - with one exception. It was retained for the sixpence and its fifty-three-year-old history only came to an end with the introduction of decimal currency in 1966. A weakly struck shield design on the reverse is regularly found on 1952 sixpences.
Until 1945, sixpences were minted in .925 fine silver. From 1946 onwards, the silver content was reduced to .500 fine. In 1947 and 1949, no sixpence was produced.
For the years 1938 to 1948, the obverse legend was: GEORGIVS VI: D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP. This was changed to: GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX FIDEI DEF. from 1950 to 1952.
