Ten cent 1996 - Not intended for circulation

The 1996 Royal Australian Mint proof coins set was presented in a see-both-sides hard plastic case and presented in a special leatherette protective wallet and a colourful presentation box.

Most years since 1966, the Royal Australian Mint has released a proof set containing proof examples of Australia's circulating coinage. Proof coins have a different and more refined manufacturing process than circulation coins. The dies are polished to give a cameo-like/mirror-like or matte finish.

In 1996, the 1 dollar coin original design was replaced with the Sir Henry Parkes design also used on the 1996 circulating dollar.

A Gumnut Baby proof set was also released. In 1996, the coins were housed, individually encapsulated, in a plush green leatherette, hinged lid presentation case and a colourful presentation box. Also included is an Antique Finish, Sterling Silver (92.5%), Gumnut medallion with a diameter of 45 mm, a thickness of 3 mm and a weight of 43 grams. One side of the medallion is blank to enable a child's name to be engraved. 3,985 Gumnut Baby proof sets were released.

NBU (Numismatic Brilliant uncirculated): Coins not intended for circulation struck and sold by the Mint, often in a special package. For most NBU certified coins, they are attributed the MS grades, unless a circulation coin wasn't produce for that particuliar combinaison of year, denomination and design. While not quite non circulating legal tender it is not too unusual to find coins intended for mint sets in circulation.

While these coins might bear the same design as normal circulating coins their lustre and quality of strike sometimes makes them stand out from the norm.
