Ten cent 1966 - Not intended for circulation
The 1966 Royal Australian Mint proof coins set was the first proof coins set issued, presented in a the navy blue case, outer cardboard sleeve.
Most years since 1966, the Royal Australian Mint has released a proof set containing proof examples of Australia's circulating coinage. Proof coins have a different and more refined manufacturing process than circulation coins. The dies are polished to give a cameo-like/mirror-like or matte finish.
Because the coins in the set were not sealed, storage in other than optimum conditions has resulted in a significant portion of 1966 proof sets containing toned coins, particularly the bronze 1 and 2 cent pieces and the round silver 50 cent coin.
As an experiment, twelve 1966 proof sets were later sealed in a see-both-sides hard plastic case. This case was later used to house proof sets issued in the years from 1969 to 1984.
