NBU (Numismatic Brilliant uncirculated): Coins not intended for circulation struck and sold by the Mint, often in a special package. For most NBU certified coins, they are attributed the MS grades, unless a circulation coin wasn't produce for that particuliar combinaison of year, denomination and design. While not quite non circulating legal tender it is not too unusual to find coins intended for mint sets in circulation.

While these coins might bear the same design as normal circulating coins their lustre and quality of strike sometimes makes them stand out from the norm.

Five dollar 2004 - Eureka Stockade

In 2004, the Royal Canadian Mint released special dollar coins to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Eureka Stockade. The design for this $1 represents the uprising of the gold miners at Ballarat. Eureka is widely viewed as the most dramatic event experienced on Australian soil in the 19th century. The event, which took place on Sunday December 3, is seen by many Australians as the rise of democracy in this country and the concept of a 'fair go'. Read more ยป

Five dollar 2004 - Tasmania Bicentenary - H

Tasmanians and visitors were able to strike the 'H' mintmark on a coin during a three-day visit to Hobart by the Royal Australian Mint. The coin design celebrates the Bicentenary of Tasmania and features the ship the Lady Nelson, plus a unique 'H' mintmark. A Mintmark is a letter struck onto a coin to designate the striking of that coin in a particular geographic area.

Five dollar 2004 - Adelaide to Darwin

To commemorate the inauguration of the rail extension from Adelaide to Darwin.

Construction for the AustralAsia Railway from Adelaide to Darwin was completed in October 2003, five months ahead of the target completion date of April 2004. The first train left Adelaide for Darwin on January 15, ahead of the original schedule.

The Silver Proof Coin captures the vastness of the land with the rail lines disappearing into the distance, while linking the three major cities of Darwin, Alice Springs and Adelaide.

For the first time in Australian history the north and south were linked by rail, providing a transcontinental trade route connecting southern Australia with Asian business markets.

Celebrating 150 years of Steam Railways in Australia. The Hobson's Bay Railway Company's first steam train left on the 4 kilometre journey from Flinders Street to Port Melbourne on September 12, 1854.
