Fifty cent 1980 - Double bar

Immediately behind the head of the emu, two lines can be seen joining the head to the swirl of Mitchell grass. The two lines are known as ‘double bars’ and can primarily be seen on 50 cent coins of 1979 and 1980. It is assumed that these lines initially formed part of the design but were removed because they caused die weakness and were subsequently removed by the Royal Australian Mint.
