Five pounds 1954 to 1966 - Price guide and values

The death of King George VI belatedly led to the introduction of new designs for the five pound note. Arctic explorer, Sir John Franklin features on the front of the new note and a mural celebrating the produce of Australia's Primary Industry surrounding a central motif of Aboriginal artefacts appears on the back.

Approximately 309,519,000 five pound notes were produced between 1954 and 1966 with the only changes being in signatory H. C. Coombs' title when responsibility for issuing notes was transferred from the Commonwealth Bank to the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Banknotes with a serial number of one million (1000000) command a significant premium. Banknote numbering machines had only six printing wheels. When the seventh digit was required to complete each series, the serial number was printed on a hand press. The practice was continued with decimalisation until 1971.
