Mercantile Bank of Sydney - Banknotes

The Mercantile Bank of Sydney was established in Sydney in 1869. Formal incorporation as a limited liability company was completed in 1873. The bank was successful in its early years but remained a relatively small organisation. A downturn in ecomonic conditios forced the company to merge - it was absorbed by the Commercial Bank of Australia Limited in 1892, now part of the Westpac Banking Group Limited.
