Mercantile Bank of Australia - Banknotes

Established as the Economic Bank of Australia in Melbourne during 1877, the company's name was changed to the Mercantile Bank of Australia Limited in 1885. The company began business financing land speculation ventures. A run on deposits forced the bank to suspend payments in 1892. Attempts to restructure the company failed and the bank was eventually liquidated in 1895.
