Threepence - 1938 to 1952 - Price Guide
The U.S.A. mints at Denver and San Francisco came to the party, churning out over £6 million worth of florins, shillings, sixpences and threepences between 1942 and 1944. These coins carry either the mintmark 'D' or 'S' respectively. In 1945 and 1946, no threepence was produced.
Collectors often face confusion when a seemingly 'worn' coin is graded as uncirculated. An unusually high proportion of weak strikes are found on the obverse of George V threepences. The detail on the reverse of threepences struck between 1938 to 1964 is often found similarly affected.
Until 1944, threepences were minted in .925 fine silver. From 1947 onwards, the silver content was reduced to .500 fine. For the years 1937 to 1948, the obverse legend was: GEORGIVS VI: D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP. This was changed to: GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX FIDEI DEF. from 1949 to 1952.
